The Ambassador Hardin-class was a type of Federation starship, a transwarp heavy cruiser in Starfleet service in the 24th century.

The mention of this class as a transwarp drive ship design seems anomalous compared to later TNG-era productions which disregard the buildup of transwarp technology mentioned in TOS movie, novelization & comic adaptation: The Search for Spock and background material for TOS movie: The Voyage Home (as documented in ST reference: Mr. Scott's Guide to the Enterprise). This could indicate the terminology was used prior to the TNG-era and then fell into disuse, or that the FASA RPG materials portray some sort of alternate history where the new technology was utilized to greater effect.

Service history and specifications

History

In the early 2360s decade, the Ambassador Hardin-class was the newest heavy cruiser in Starfleet, designed for major task group actions, providing close-fire support, effective even when Federation vessels would be outnumbered. The Hardin cruisers were equipped with heavy long-range phasers and a large complement of photon torpedoes, enabling engagement against opponents at long range and able to inflict moderate damage and lend direct fire support from most any tactical position within an attack group or flotilla.

The Ambassador Hardin ships were typically launched with a full complement of Starfleet Marines trained in zero-gravity combat and boarding party maneuvers, supplementing the design's effectiveness as a combat vessel. Distinctive in appearance, the Hardin has transwarp drive nacelles to port and starboard attached to the rear of the vessel. From the 2360s, Argelius Shipyards produced three of these ships per year. Ships of this class are named for individuals who have made significant contributions in recent Federation history.

Auxiliary craft

The Ambassador Hardin ships were normally loaded with 6 shuttlecraft. (FASA RPG module: Star Trek: The Next Generation Officer's Manual)

While the stats do not specify the type or modification of the shuttles and other auxiliary craft aboard the Hardin vessels, it is possible the number references only general-use shuttles and omits workbees, travel pods and other specialized impulse engine craft like high-capacity escape pods. The source material lists shuttle classes such as the S-20 (aka "type-7") administrative shuttle, SC-22 Sphinx-class cargo shuttle and SW-21 warpshuttle, inferring the Hardin's six to include one or more of these types. Other concurrent shuttle classes include the type-4, type-6, type-9A cargo shuttle and the type-15/16 shuttlepod, but these had not been conceived of at the time of the FASA game design.
