This ship class was a 22nd century Earth spacecraft type, a warp-capable ship smaller and slower than the contemporary NX class in the 2150s decade. (ENT episode: "The Expanse")
Naming
The Ganges class was operated by United Earth Starfleet and Federation Starfleet following the formation of the Federation. (ENT - Rise of the Federation novel: Uncertain Logic)
Warp Delta was a designation based on the shape and warp-capability of this class. Ships of the class carried the DX registry number prefix and were numbered sequentially from construction. (Star Trek Adventures RPG module: Utopia Planitia Starfleet Sourcebook)
The UES Warp Delta was a ship of this class. (TOSC Issue 82: "United Earth Starfleet Warp Delta")
The 25th century Khitomer Alliance members referred to this ship type as the NP class. By default, NP-class starships were numbered sequentially with the NP registry number prefix. There were three options for a ship name prefix: none, SS and USS. The 24th century Ortiz-class was a modernized variant of the 22nd century NP class. History and specifications
History
The Ganges class was introduced in 2125 as an heavily armed escort for cargo and colony ships. (Star Trek Adventures RPG module: Utopia Planitia Starfleet Sourcebook)
By the mid-22nd century the Ganges class was considered to be an older ship design, but several ships were still in active service. Along with the SS Intrepid two such vessels chased away a Klingon bird-of-prey when it attacked Enterprise in the Sol system after its return following the Xindi attack in 2153. (ENT episode: "The Expanse")
In 2154, at least three Ganges class ships were part of the fleet that welcomed back the Enterprise to Earth. (ENT episode: "Storm Front")
This class was also present in the mirror universe. (ENT episode: "In a Mirror, Darkly")
The class even served in the Earth-Romulan War, for example the Eberswalde patrolled Romulan territory. (ENT - Rise of the Federation novel: Uncertain Logic)
As part of UESPA Chief of Staff Admiral Jonathan Archer and Alpha Centauri Chief of Staff Alexis Osman's fleet modernization program, a new wave of Ganges class vessels were under construction by 2165. (ENT - Rise of the Federation novel: Live by the Code)
The Ganges class was then used to patrol the Sol system and other human colonies until being retired from Starfleet in 2190. (Star Trek Adventures RPG module: Utopia Planitia Starfleet Sourcebook)
Specifications
Ganges class ships were about 130 meters long and initially could carry a crew of 20. Initially, ships of this class had a top speed of warp 2.2 and featured rocket-style engines at the rear. While Emmette's hull was as compact and triangular as its successors, it was shorter, and the nacelle pylons were angled differently. Following upgrades to hull and engines, Ganges-class starships could reach warp 3 and carried a crew of 30. (The Official Starships Collection Issue 82: "United Earth Starfleet Warp Delta", Shipyards reference: Starfleet Ships 2151 - 2293)
After the success of the Warp five engine the class was upgraded with a new type of Warp coil that allowed the ships to reach a speed of warp 4. (Star Trek Adventures RPG module: Utopia Planitia Starfleet Sourcebook)
Ganges class ships were equipped with forward, aft, ventral and dorsal phase cannons and a single torpedo launcher for offense and polarized hull plating for defense. (ENT episodes: "The Expanse", "Twilight", Shipyards reference: Starfleet Ships 2151 - 2293, Star Trek Adventures RPG module: Utopia Planitia Starfleet Sourcebook)

Background
| This section is written from the Real World point of view. |
