The Obena class was a 24th century Federation starship class, a multirole explorer in Starfleet service from the 2380s decade through the end of the century. The first ship of the class was the USS Obena (NX-/NCC-83000). (Star Trek Adventures module: Lower Decks Campaign Guide)

History and specifications

Technical specifications

The Obena class was the spiritual successor of the Excelsior-class, which served as a workhorse for Starfleet. Propulsion systems included a powerful matter/antimatter warp drive with a maximum warp factor of 9.988. The quantum slipstream burst drive enabled an Obena to move 318 lightyears per hour. The burst drive was a variant of the quantum slipstream drive. Multiple fusion reactors powered the impulse drive.

The spaceframe trait was Federation starship and houses systems with different ratings: comms 9, engines 12, structure 10, computers 9, sensors 10, weapons 10. This class carried extra conn, engineering and science departments.

Weapon systems consisted of phaser beam arrays, quantum torpedo launchers and tractor beam generators. Compared to other Federation starships, the Obena class benefited from an improved warp drive and secondary reactors. The USS Archimedes held additional talents: advanced sensor suites, extensive shuttlebays and high-resolution sensors.

As a multirole explorer, Obenas performed missions like pathfinder and reconnaissance operations, scientific and survey operations. Through the rest of the 24th century, communications systems were improved to allow for greater subspace transmission distances.

Primary shipyards were the Yoyodyne Propulsion Systems shipyard at Proxima, Imperial Fleet Yards at Andoria and the East Wind Systems of Denobula.

Ships of the class were named after historical artists and thinkers of Federation members. Their registry numbers were NCC-83000 and higher. (Star Trek Adventures module: Lower Decks Campaign Guide)

Service history

Obena-class starships were commissioned in the year 2380 and officially launched in 2381 with the USS Obena, registry number NX-/NCC-83000. The USS Archimedes (NCC-83002) launched in 2381 under the command of Captain Sonya Gomez.

In 2381, the Archimedes made first contact with the Lapeerian Assembly. The vessel was almost destroyed by a plasma wave. In the years after, the Archimedes pushed deeply into the Shackleton Expanse towards Phi Velorum.

Other active ships included the USS da Vinci, USS Warhol and USS Kant. (Star Trek Adventures module: Lower Decks Campaign Guide)
