A reference work is a collection of information compiled together, usually by some linked theme, so that it can easily be referenced. It is generally intended to be used to look up information rather than read cover to cover. Types of reference books include dictionaries, encyclopedias, atlases, etc.
Star Trek reference works tend to either approach their subject as if it were fact within the Star Trek fictional world, or from the real-world perspective looking at the production of the Star Trek franchise.
