Events

Captain John Christopher is stationed at the command headquarters of the 498th Air Base in Nebraska, North America.^[3]
Gary Seven is dispatched to Earth to find out why contact is lost with other fellow agents, and after he finds out they are dead, he assumes their mission.^[4]
An event of multi-parallel space-time inversion briefly causes William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, and DeForest Kelley from Desilu Studios in California to be transposed with Captain James T. Kirk, Commander Spock, and Doctor Leonard McCoy aboard the Enterprise in the 23rd century.^[5]
Bob Gibson, a St. Louis Cardinals pitcher, wins the first of his two Cy Young Awards.^[6]
The song "Magic Carpet Ride" is written by musicians John Kay and Rushton Moreve and performed by Steppenwolf.^[6]

The United States of America launches a nuclear warhead platform from McKinley Rocket Base. Following the launch, the platform develops a severe malfunction, and begins to reenter the atmosphere. Attempts to initiate destruct initially fail, but the platform eventually detonates 104 miles above Asia. The result is a new and stronger agreement against the use of such weapons.^[4]^[7]
The USS Enterprise travels back from 2268 to study how Earth survived this period in its history. It becomes involved in the platform crisis, and is instrumental in causing the detonation of the falling platform.^[4]^[7]

A major assassination and an Asian coup d'etat occur, both on the same day.^[4]^[7]
James Wykoff rues the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. and thought that it made the world of Deep Space Nine seem farther away than ever.^[9]

While on vacation in Acapulco Gillian Taylor spots a school of migrating blue whales.^[10]

Gillian Taylor changes her major to marine biology, and eventually graduates magna cum laude.^[10]
