Spain and surrounding nations.
Spain was a nation-state on the planet Earth, located on the European continent. It bordered France, Portugal, the Atlantic Ocean, and the Mediterranean Sea. The capital of this nation-state was Madrid. Its people spoke Spanish.
Spain was a leader in global exploration and expansionism, beginning in the 15th century. The most famous early Spanish voyage was Christopher Columbus's successful journey across the Atlantic Ocean to North America. Numerous viceroyalties were established on both North and South America, the Pacific Ocean, and in Asia, with Spanish warrior/explorers, called Conquistadors, annexing indigenous peoples and cultures, including the Aztecs and other Native American tribes.
The early Spanish Empire also attempted to use their political power to expand Catholic Christian teachings and belief, with an ecclesiastical council called the Spanish Inquisition helping to evade other non catholic or non indigenous beliefs both in europe and other countries, working more like a political court rather than a religious one. Centuries later, Q would comment that Earth was less dull during the Spanish Inquisition, although other countries also had Inquisition, and it was a french invention, and in the case of America, it barely had influence. (DS9 episode: "Q-Less")
