El Sol was an ancient Earth sailing vessel in service to the Spanish Empire, a galleon.
Service history
El Sol was in full sail when it departed the Bahamas en route to Spain, then ran into a rough storm. Believed to have been weighted down by a cargo of fresh water and flipped over by an unexpected white squall, it sank and was lost with all hands. The galleon was reputed to contain a vast fortune in gold, inspiring treasuring hunting for nearly 150 years in regions around the Abaco Islands. The wreck was eventually located about 1,000 miles away from where hunters thought it had gone down, but only one gold item was ever recovered, a doubloon.
Legacy
In the 2260s decade, the doubloon recovered from El Sol was chosen by race committee Chairman John Orland as the ownership prize for winning The Great Starship Race. (TOS novel: The Great Starship Race)
