Shumar was a type of plant native to the planet Vulcan.

History and specifics

Shumar grew wild along irrigation canals like a weed. Its seeds were useful as a cooking spice. Its stalks were also harvested, served with salt, butter, and cheese as a side dish.

In the 2260s decade, Commander Spock gave Nurse Christine Chapel a recipe that used the shumar stalks. Chapel adapted it for the USS Enterprise's food processors, describing it as fennel au gratin with Swiss cheese and fennel stalks. (TOS reference: Official Cooking Manual)
