Butter is a type of processed material that is usually made by grinding or churning a raw material until it separates into one or more usable consistencies. Most often, butter is made by processes that release fats and oils, or liquids, from a raw material, changing the consistency completely.

In the Human vernacular, the term butter by itself usually refers to the creamy food ingredient created by churning the milk of an animal.
