Description

In the tradition of "Unification", here is the story that fans of the original Star Trek series and Star Trek: The Next Generation have been clamoring for—Montgomery Scott's return to the Star Trek universe and his encounter with the crew of the USS Enterprise (NCC 1701-D).

Missing in space for seventy-five years, Scotty manages to survive against incredible odds, only to be found by the crew of the starship Enterprise. Though rescued, Scotty soon finds himself lost in a world that he barely recognizes, a world that has passed him by…

But the adventure is not over for Captain Scott who must do the impossible when the new USS Enterprise faces a very old danger in a remote sector of space. This time, Captain Picard and his crew will need more than all of their courage and all of their skills to save the great starship from destruction. This time, they will need a miracle worker.

Summary

This summary is based on the novelisation and may differ in some ways from the televised version.

Montgomery Scott is on his way to retirement on Norpin V aboard the USS Jenolen when it stops to carry out a scientific study of a Dyson Sphere. An attempt to communicate sees the Jenolen suffer a major systems fault. A small group of crew try to bring it into a safe landing but the passenger area ruptures, suffocating nearly everyone on board with Scotty and Ensign Matt Franklin the only survivors. With limited supplies, Scotty places them in a transporter cycle to await rescue.

Seventy-five years later, the Enterprise-D finds the Jenolen. Scotty is reconstructed but Franklin has degraded too much. Scotty finds himself at a loss on the advanced ship, with his attempt to help out in engineering hampered by his outdated knowledge, resulting in La Forge ordering him out. Empathising with him, Picard suggests Geordi take Scotty to the Jenolen to retrieve the sensor records.

The Enterprise triggers an automatic response similar to what the Jenolen did and a tractor beam takes it inside the sphere, leaving it orbiting the sun. Scotty and Geordi realise what has happened and manage to trigger the opening of a hatch and then use the Jenolen to wedge it open. The Enterprise's ability to respond is hampered by the fact Riker has taken an away team to investigate a sensor blind spot and reckless phaser usage by Ensign Kane has seen his friend Andy Sousa injured by falling machinery. The away team makes it to the beam-down point just in time and the Enterprise also retrieves Scotty and Geordi as they blast through the Jenolen on the way out.

Scotty is gifted the shuttlecraft Christopher on extended loan and heads out to explore.

Background

A scene between Scotty and Troi in Scotty's quarters was filmed for the television version, but deleted due to time constraints. It features in the novelization.
The novelization later became an audiobook adapted by the author (although credited as Jan Michael Friedman) and narrated by James Doohan with an introduction and conclusion by LeVar Burton. The U. K. audiobook edition is ISBN 067185612X.
