Helium (symbol He) is a chemical element, a gas with atomic number 2 on the periodic table.

History and specifics

Helium has an atomic mass of 4.0026, and was discovered by Humans for the first time on Earth's European continent in the year 1895. (ST reference: Star Fleet Medical Reference Manual)

The inert gas existed as a superconducting liquid near absolute zero temperatures in space. The biology of some life was helium-based. Class J gas giants commonly had helium and hydrogen atmospheres. (Decipher RPG module: Worlds)

Stars such as Exo contracted while burning helium. (ST reference: Star Trek Maps)

Class 1 and 2 nebulas contained helium. (Adventures RPG module: The Sciences Division)

The class R planet Andorgha had a helium atmosphere (TOS video game: The Kobayashi Alternative), as did Rigel XVI. (Decipher RPG module: Worlds)

Around 1,148,000 BCE (reference stardate −11,500/00), Rigel's helium core was removed and mined, enabling it to burn hotter. Many centuries later, Rigel's helium ash was removed to stabilize and reinvigorate the star. (FASA RPG module: The Orions: Book of Deep Knowledge)

In the 24th century, Helium-3 was processed at Kolhor Station on Rigel X. (Decipher RPG module: Worlds)

Technological uses

A plasma torch was powered by superheated and ionized helium. (Adventures RPG module: The Klingon Empire Core Rulebook)

Helium fusion fueled a Spinner-class Tholian starship's high-energy density impulse engine. (Adventures RPG module: Alpha Quadrant Sourcebook)

Highly-compressed liquid helium inflated Starfleet's Harris-Consolidated WW-1 Inflatable Decoys. Limited maneuverability came from venting helium through exhaust ports made to look like thrusters. (Adventures RPG module: The Animated Series Supplemental Guide)

By the late 24th century, helium plasma was used in Starfleet impulse engines. (Last Unicorn RPG - SA module: Starfleet Academy Handbook)

Unusual uses

Helium-a-roni was among the 23rd century food specialties crafted by Marsfoods Corporation. (FASA RPG module: Spacelanes: The Magazine of Interstellar Trade)
