Ship-based phaser turret.
Plasma turret.
Polaron turret.
A turret was a weapon technology type, a directed energy weapons emitter deployed both as a starship weapon and a defensive weapon platform operating on its own. In the 25th century, the Khitomer Alliance classed turrets used in space as a type of cannon. Unlike other cannon types, which usually had a 90° firing arc and dealt the most damage to a target, a turret enjoyed a 360° firing arc but carried the lowest damage potential of all weapon types. Turrets fired a series of energy bolts one at a time. (STO - Klingon War missions: "Welcome to Earth Spacedock", "The Hunt is On", "Explore the Flotilla", "Ceremony")
History and specifics
Turret defensive platforms
In space, turrets were small unmanned defensive platforms which were used for protective purposes in the absence of starships. They had no propulsion system, and so were transported using starship tractor beams.
A single turret was placed to safeguard engineering station 473 and shipyard 17 within the Encaria star system by May 2159.
In 2270, a series of turrets were placed by the Klingon Empire within the Kathra system.
In 2273, a series of Federation turrets were used by T'Uerell.
By 2333, Starbase 61 was complemented with six defensive platforms in the Phidian system. That year, the crew modified the turrets to increase their range in power. Deployed by Starfleet vessels via tractor beam over the inhabited planets in the system, these turrets provided a defense against incoming stellar debris.
In 2368, a series of turrets was placed within the Itarian nebula by the Tal Shiar to protect their starbase.
In 2380, a pair of Federation turrets were placed within the Hayre Expanse's system. (ST video game: Legacy)
Turret cannons
In the category of ship-based cannons, turrets exhibited the lowest damage potential compared to baseline cannons, dual cannons, dual heavy cannons and quad quannons. Unlike other cannons, which could only be installed on a ship's forward weapon emplacements, a turret could be positioned in the fore and aft. Turrets could be installed on any starship and small craft type. In the 25th century, the Khitomer Alliance differentiated between six basic damage types, and a plethora of variants. Phaser turrets fired orange bolts that had, by default, a 2.5% change of disabling a target's subsystem. Lime-green disruptor turrets had a similar chance of temporarily lowering the structural integrity field. Romulan and Borg ships could fitted with spring-green plasma turrets. Alliance polaron turrets fired purple, while those of the Dominion were pink or blue. Tetryon turrets, default for Hirogen Hierarchy ships, fired light blue; and antiproton turrets, like those of the Fek'Ihri Horde, fired red. Satellite turret
In the 25th century, the Khitomer Alliance identified satellite turrets and torpedo platforms as deployable space-based devices. Starships could launch such weapon platforms to aid in their defense and attack nearby hostile targets. Research and Development (R&D) personnel could manufacture such platforms from prototype plans. Alliance commanding officer could also purchase them through trade. (STO - Klingon War missions: "Welcome to Earth Spacedock", "The Hunt is On", "Explore the Flotilla", "Ceremony")
