In a computer system or otherwise organized framework, a subsystem was a unit that was part of a larger system. Aboard starships and space stations, subsystems controlled specific functions and were part of the overall system controlling the entire vessel. For instance, in the 2400s decade the aging 23rd century systems of Drozana Station required the rerouting of power between different systems and relays in order to power the replicators of the inhabited decks. History

In the year 2366, Starfleet officer Commander William T. Riker was a hostage aboard the FMS Krayton. In order to facilitate an escape, he accessed the warp field phase adjustment subsystem of the Ferengi starship. This subsystem was responsible for suppressing subspace interference generated by the warp engines. (TNG episode: "Ménage à Troi")

In the 2380s, the environmental subsystem was part of the life support system aboard Federation Protostar-class starships. (PRD episode: "Starstruck")

In the year 2409, Bartender Belan made a deal with Starfleet, Klingon Defense Force and Romulan Republic Navy officers to get them to reroute power through various subsystem's to Drozana Station's replicators. (STO - Spectres mission: "Spin the Wheel")

Subsystems

By the 2410s, the Khitomer Alliance members agreed on a standard where a commanding officer could allocate a total of 200 power units to four primary subsystems: weapons, shields, engines and auxiliary. Increasing power levels for one system lowered the energy allocated to another. For instance, accelerating a starship to full impulse speeds reduced its weapons power. (STO - Common Ground missions: "Welcome to Earth Spacedock", "The Hunt is On", "Explore the Flotilla", "Ceremony")
