Trevean, a Teplan man.

Trevean, a Teplan man.

The Teplans are a humanoid species (DS9 episode: "The Quickening") hailing from a world in the Teplan system in the Gamma Quadrant's Kendari sector. (ST reference: Star Charts; STO episode: "Gamma Quadrant")

History and specifics

By the 22nd century, the Teplans had built great cities and possessed the technology to travel to other worlds. All that changed when they attempted to resist the Dominion, believing they would be able to. The Dominion had the Jem'Hadar infect the entire population with a disease that became known as the blight. The disease killed many Teplans and was also passed on to their children, although very few Teplans lived long enough to have children anyway. (DS9 episode: "The Quickening")

In 2372, Julian Bashir and Jadzia Dax traveled to the Teplan homeworld, where Bashir became determined to find a cure. Bashir believed he was close to finding one, before discovering that the electromagnetic fields from his equipment were hastening the disease. While he did not find a cure, Bashir accidentally found a way to inoculate future Teplans against the blight, by allowing an antigen to be absorbed by a mother's placenta while a baby was still in the womb. After returning to Deep Space 9, Bashir continued his work to find a cure for those with the blight. (DS9 episode: "The Quickening")

In 2376, the crew of the Even Odds discovered Teplan folk art from a time before they were infected with the blight. (DS9 novel: Rising Son)

Mirror universe

Like their counterparts from the prime reality, they also defied the Dominion. However, this version of the Dominion was far more ruthless than its prime counterpart. While the Founders of the prime reality, merely inflicted them with the "blight", the mirror Founders ordered the entire mass extermination of the planet's population by using a different biogenic weapon. Within two weeks, the inhabitants had perished to the last man, and the planet was cracked open to be mined of all its mineral wealth, leaving behind a completely dead world. Such a brutal act was intended to be a reminder to all who opposed the will of the Dominion. (Decipher RPG module: Through a Glass, Darkly)
