Proud Helios is a Star Trek: Deep Space Nine novel by Melissa Scott. It was published in 1995.

The crew of Deep Space 9 encounter a ship of pirates preying on ships near Bajoran space.

Introduction

From the back cover: The free flow of traffic to the Gamma Quadrant is vital to the recovery and survival of the planet Bajor and to Federation interests as well. When a mysterious cloaked ship begins raiding wormhole shipping, cleaning out holds and killing entire crews, Commander Benjamin Sisko of Deep Space Nine acts at once to stop the menace.

Commander Sisko has unexpected aid: the cloaked vessel has been striking Cardassian ships as well, and the Cardassian commander Gul Dukat intends to destroy the ship at all costs. Their unlikely alliance works well - until two of Sisko's crewmen are captured by the raiders. Gul Dukat will stop at nothing to gain his victory; now Sisko must locate the predator ship, hold off the Cardassians long enough to rescue his people - and prevent an interstellar war.

Summary

The pirate vessel Helios has been raiding Cardassian ships for several months, leading to the Cardassian military stepping up efforts to stop them. Captain Demaree Kolovzon decides to start raiding near Bajoran space, particularly on ships using the wormhole. The Helios has the advantage of having a cloaking device, but needs to obtain material for repairs completed first.

The Helios starts attacking shipping and attack a Xawe merchant vessel whose distress call is picked up by Deep Space 9. Major Kira and Dr. Bashir take the runabout Ganges to assist the Xawe vessel, but the ship is destroyed by the Helios before they can reach it.

Constable Odo starts to interview freighter captains about the pirate vessel, and meets a woman called Diaadul who arrives on the station aboard such a freighter. Diaadul’s late husband had dealings with Quark, and she wants to complete them. Odo is suspicious, and asks Commander Sisko’s permission to monitor Diaadul and Sisko assigns Kira to do so.

In Cardassian space, the Helios is attacked by a patrol lead by Gul Dukat. Captain Kolovzon orders the ship to use the metaphasic shielding that that stole from the Ferengi and the ship hides within a star’s corona until they can escape from the Cardassian ships. They travel to the Denorios belt, near Deep Space 9.

Garak passes useful information to Bashir, who reports it to Sisko, who informs Admirals Angerich and Ledesma. The admirals order Sisko to bring in the pirates alive, for trial in the Federation. Dax discovers that someone on the station is sending information to the Helios.

Two gunrunners, Vilis Möhrlein and Kerel Tama, dock their ship, the Carabas, at the station, to Odo’s annoyance. He has had dealings with the pair in the past, and even though the pair supplied weapons to the Bajoran Resistance, Odo wants to see them pay for their crimes. The pair meet with Diaadul in Quark’s, a meeting that Odo spies on. Odo learns that Diaadul is working for the Helios. When Diaadul tries to board the Carabas, Sisko, Kira and Odo are waiting with a security team. Möhrlein and Tama surrender, but Diaadul flees, with Kira in pursuit. Diaadul transports to the lower core, where she takes Chief O’Brien hostage. Kira arrives, but is shot by Diaadul, who contacts the Helios, who transport all three onboard.
