Playstation is a brand of video game consoles produced by Sony.
The original Playstation console was released in 1994, with succesive generations released in subsequent years. The latest home console, the Playstation 5 (PS5), was released in 2020. Two hand-held consoles have also been released, the Playstation Portable (PSP) in 2004, followed by the PS Vita in 2011. Star Trek games have been released for all five home consoles as well as the PSP, with several featuring backwards compatibility which allows them to play games released for previous console generations.
Whilst all consoles have supported native games being released via physical media, from the PSP onwards they have also been available via digital download, with some being exclusively digital. In instances where licensing agreements have not been renewed and games have been de-listed from digital storefronts these games are no longer accessible to new players, unlike physical releases which are still available on the second-hand market. Several console generations have also had the ability to play DVD (PS2 onwards), Blu Ray (PS3 onwards) and 4K UHD Blu Ray (PS5) discs. The feature film Star Trek Nemesis was also released on UMD (Universal Media Disc), a format used solely by the PSP.
