Q explaining the multiverse.

The multiverse is the sum total of all existence, the compiled mass of every universe and presumably other extra-dimensional realms such as fluidic space.

Very few species have the capabilities to explore the entire multiverse and the vast majority stay well within the confines of their own universes. One species that can and readily do traverse the mulitverse are the Q. (TNG novels: Q-Zone, Q-Space, Q-Strike)

History

In 2273, Q described the multiverse using the metaphor of a continuous ocean interconnecting reality for Willard Decker and the merged consciousness he shared with V'Ger and the Ilia probe. (TOS - Waypoint - Special comic: "Consider Eternity")

In 2378, Lore unleashed the power of the Orb of Destruction within the Pleroma, unleashing a wave of destruction across the multiverse. (ST - IDW - Pleroma comic: "Part 5" & ST - IDW - When the Walls Fell comic: "Part 2")

In 2380, all Kathryn Janeways in the multiverse died through various means. Her death became a fixed point in time that even the Q Continuum dared not change. However, Q saved Janeway from oblivion in the primary universe and aided in her return to the living in mid-2381. (VOY novel: The Eternal Tide)

The Beagle originated from a reality where Zefram Cochrane had built a quantum reality drive that could cross universes rather than a warp drive. The Beagle's travels across the multiverse however opened unstable quantum fissures. When the Beagle was destroyed, it sent dangerous solitron waves across all reality. At the advice of William Boimler, the waves were sent only to the primary universe, as Boimler was sure the USS Cerritos could counter the threat. While the Cerritos did indeed stop the threat, they were unable to seal the fissure, reshaping it into a stable portal to the multiverse at Malor's advice. With Starbase 80 towed to the portal, Starfleet began exploring the multiverse. (LD episodes: "Fissure Quest", "The New Next Generation")

In the War of the Prophets alternate timeline, Miles O'Brien posited that there had to be multiverses where the universe did not end in the year 2400. (DS9 - Millennium novel: Inferno)

In 2258 of the Kelvin timeline, Gary Mitchell left his reality upon gaining his powers and began to travel the multiverse, the infinity of universes overwhelming him and convincing him that everything was pointless. Still haunted by his loss to Kirk, Mitchell first wiped out his variants across the multiverse before he created a quantum storm to get revenge on Kirk and his variants across the multiverse, intending to force Kirk into a no-win scenario. Kirk chose to willingly lose the contest, prompting an enraged Mitchell to return Kirk and his variants to their realities. (TOS - IDIC comics: "Part 5", "Part 6")

Terminology

Due to escalation of the conflict, the Aetherians and Khitomer Alliance later called it the multiversal war. (STO - Kings & Queens mission: "Axiom")
