Phytotomy of a mahko root.
A mahko root (also rendered as mako root) was a root plant found on the planet Neural.
History and specifics
The plant was used by the Kahn-ut-tu healers to treat mugato bites poisoning. (TOS episode: "A Private Little War") Root enzymes reacted chemically with proteins from iron-based blood to produce an antitoxin. (Last Unicorn RPG module: TOS Core Game Book, ST reference: The Starfleet Survival Guide)
The mahko root was a staple in the diet of pregnant and nursing female mugatos. (ST reference: The Starfleet Survival Guide)
It did not flower, but grew a narrow tuber seed pouch at the tip of the stem that yielded just one large seed per growing season. The root produced a wriggling motion when it tried to burrow. Newly-formed tubers were medicinally useful. These plants formed large colonies in remote regions. (ST reference: Star Fleet Medical Reference Manual)
In the year 2268, Nona used a mahko root to cure mugato poisoning in Captain James T. Kirk. She claimed that the cure would form a psychic connection between them that would compel him to obey her forever. (TOS episode & Star Trek 10 novelization: A Private Little War)
In 2385, Ishka made a poultice containing mahko roots to treat Maihar'du’s Hupyrian quinsy. (DS9 novel: Rules of Accusation)
