Symbol of the Circle

Symbol of the Circle

The Alliance for Global Unity was a Bajoran extremist group that rejected the outside influence of non-Bajorans and aimed to expel all aliens from Bajor. It was also known as the Circle, after its insignia. (Decipher RPG module: Aliens)

History

Initial activities

In 2318, the Circle was active in opposing involvement of Cardassians on Bajor, but at the time was considered to be an extremist group, even by the standards of the other resistance cells across the planet. They would continue their opposition to the Cardassians throughout the 2320s until the Occupation of Bajor. (ST - Terok Nor novel: Day of the Vipers)

The group was in existence by 2369 when the United Federation of Planets began assisting the Provisional Government. (DS9 short story: "Ha'mara")

Attempted coup

The Alliance was led by Jaro Essa, who also held the position of a Minister in the Bajoran government. In 2370, with Bajor teetering on the edge of a possible civil war, Jaro launched a coup d'état. However, the senior staff of Deep Space 9 discovered that the Cardassians were covertly supporting the Circle, and the revelation discredited the movement and ended the coup attempt. (DS9 episodes: "The Homecoming", "The Circle", "The Siege")

Later that year, the Provisional Government began including more Bajoran extremist factions in talks, to as to avoid more "internal squabbles" like the Circle's coup. Benjamin Sisko told Declan Keogh and Joseph Shabalala about this soon after. (DS9 - The Brave and the Bold, Book One novella: The Second Artifact)

After the coup, the Circle Commission was established to investigate and prosecute those involved. In 2372, General Krim Aldos was exonerated of any wrongdoing. (DS9 novel: Bajor: Fragments and Omens)

Persistent remnants

Although the revelation that Cardassian intermediaries were funnelling supplies to Jaro Essa left the Circle a discredited organisation, survivors of the original movement continued to affect the destinies of their people and homeworld and disintegrated to become holdout factions with persisted. While the provisional government had been able to conduct investigations that enabled them to arrest multiple associates and dismantle their operations until Kira Nerys believed that the extremist front was reduced to a chapter in Bajoran history, the force which had been called the Alliance for Global Unity persisted, albeit in an insubstantial form. Lacking a name, those who were sympathetic about the mantra "Bajor for the Bajorans" continued to remain active, including some that occupied important offices within the administration.

The remaining members of the Circle who had not been arrested went underground following the coup. In 2370, the remaining members of the Circle attempted to assassinate Commander Sisko and Major Kira, and tried to sabotage the launch of the USS Hannibal. (DS9 novel: Antimatter)

Another holdout faction of the Circle reassembled beneath the leadership of Zoal, a former rebel fighter that had led the Carrath resistance cell before the Cardassian withdrawal. Under his command, this remnant was prepared to commit its members to the suicidal terrorist strikes where the participants utilised their own weapons as a means to kill themselves if the situation demanded it, setting phasers to overload in an explosion that would reduce the attackers to ash. Most Bajorans who served with the splinter group wore trademark black clothes who showed a minimal amount of skin. However, despite their traditional hatred for Cardassians, Zoal and his followers would band together with survivors from the Obsidian Order after its collapse, dubbing their new organisation the "Shadow Group". Together, this organisation conspired to draw Cardassia into war with the United Federation of Planets. (DS9 comic: "The Shadow Group")

Following the temporary relocation of Starfleet operations from DS9 to Hathon in 2409, an agitator exclaimed "Bajor for Bajorans!" to voice his and others' displeasure with the strong Starfleet and Klingon Defense Force presence in the city. (STO - Cardassian Struggle mission: "Of Bajor")

Background

The Circle was an extremist nationalist movement that sought to overthrow the Bajoran provisional government and violently opposed Bajor's associations with any government as the believed that they were exchanging one master for another. Their motto gave an ugly face to the traditional Bajoran desire for isolation. (Decipher RPG module: Aliens)
