The Central Intelligence Agency, more popularly known as the CIA, was the intelligence service of the United States of America in the 20th and 21st centuries.

The CIA eventually became to be known for secretive—and sometimes, underhanded—tactics. James T. Kirk mused that the Patrian police telepaths of the "Mindcrime Unit" were worse than the CIA, Gestapo and KGB combined. (TOS novel: The Patrian Transgression)

The Beta 5 computer provided agent Gary Seven with a CIA alias when he went to stop the United States from launching an orbital nuclear warhead platform. Before Roberta Lincoln learned the true nature of Seven's work, Seven told her that he worked for the CIA. (TOS episode: "Assignment: Earth")
