Yano was a 23rd century Fayon man who succeeded his father Bavoda as Emperor of Fayo.
Biography
Yano was a talented poet, painter and musician. His father loved and trusted him, but Yano deplored his father's tyranny and sought open elections, fair juries and freedom. He believed changes made through violence would not stand and hoped he could persuade his father to enact reforms.
In the 2260s, as the mysterious "Red Raven", Yano secretly led rebel forces which managed to gain control of jungles and regions outside of the cities. Bavoda's military leader Colonel Lam managed to learn Yano's secret.
In 2266, a landing party from the starship USS Enterprise visited Bavoda and agreed to enroll Yano in Starfleet Academy. Bavoda hoped his son would then serve a tour in Starfleet and learn more about the sciences and arts. Before that could happen, however, Yano chose to exchange himself in hostage negotiations with rebels.
Kirk, Spock and Montgomery Scott attempted to rescue Yano, and while sharing a cell with Yano learned that he was the "Red Raven". His fake kidnapping was meant to force Bavoda to grant freedoms for the people in exchange for Yano's safety.
Yano thought he might be able to leverage the officers' presence to move the rebellion forward, but Lam saw it as an opportunity to kill Yano without consequences. Lam's plot was exposed, but Yano's convictions spurred Bavoda to abdicate, placing his crown on Yano. (TOS comic: "Prince Traitor")
