The Soong Method was the process in which a consciousness was transferred from a natural life form into an artifical duplicate of that life form.
History and specifics
The method consisted of scanning an individual's neurological system and creating a neural map in a positronic matrix that could be used to host the neural patterns of the individual.
In 2399, Altan Inigo Soong created an android which he called a golem. Using what would come to be called the "Soong" method, Dr. Soong, Soji, and Agnes Jurati were able to successfully transfer Picard's consciousness into the golem before his original body died from a brain tumor. The success of the method with Picard led to a number of other attempts to transfer consciousnesses into android bodies. However, after a number of attempts the method was largely abandoned due to its low success rate. In late 3189 a medical officer on USS Discovery named Dr. Hugh Culber began searching for a way to transfer the consciousness of Gray Tal into a form that could interact with the physical world again when he found the 800 year old Soong method. After building an android body Gray's consciousness was transferred into the golem with the assistance of a Trill Guardian. Following the transfer, Gray was at first unresponsive and was feared to have been lost. However, Gray was able to regain consciousness and reunited with Adira and Culber.
