A solar storm destroyed the colony on Ximega II.

A solar storm was an astronomical phenomena produced by a star.

History and specifics

Solar storms consisted of solar flares, intense bursts of electromagnetic radiation and other phenomena from a star. Their effects ranged from disrupted communications to devastating planetary surfaces.

Sol system

In 2218, the Fireball Eclipse on Earth resulted when a solar storm erupted during a solar eclipse, creating dramatic views of Sol's corona. (TOS - Rihannsu novel: Swordhunt)

In 2275, while observing Earth from orbit, Spock considered various seasonal affects on the planet's weather, including solar storms. (TOS novel: Spock's World)

In 2286, the HMS Bounty evaded a solar storm while approaching Sol for its slingshot maneuver to time travel back to the 20th century. (TOS novelization: The Voyage Home)

In 2353, an unusually strong solar storm in the Sol system disrupted communications between Mars and Starfleet Academy. (VOY - Starfleet Academy novella: Quarantine)

Elsewhere

Obsidian natives sought shelter on the planet Obsidian during periodic solar storms. A Sunstorm Truce was in effect during these times, creating a cease fire between tribes. (TOS novel: Vulcan's Forge)

In 2233 of the Kelvin timeline, after the Narada emerged from a temporal disruption within the Federation-Klingon Neutral Zone, the mining vessel was confronted by the IKS Klothos. Nero claimed that his ship had been drawn off course by a solar storm, but Captain Kor didn't believe him. (TOS - Nero comic: "Number 1")

In the 23rd century, solar storms destroyed the Ximegan colony on Ximega II and killed all but two of its colonists. Radiation from the storms erased vital data aboard a probe that would have allowed nanoassemblers to restore the colony's buildings and all of its inhabitants. (TOS - Star Trek: The Manga - Shinsei Shinsei comic: "Anything But Alone")

In 2268, solar flares from the star Minara produced a storm with dangerous levels of cosmic rays that lasted 74 hours. This threat was enough to divert the starship USS Enterprise away from the system until the storm passed, but the atmosphere of Minara II protected its surface from harm. (TOS episode: "The Empath")

In the 24th century, the interstellar Asheraki civilization expected a massive solar storm to destroy Asherak. They prepared to colonize the neighboring Luran system by force. (Last Unicorn RPG module: Star Trek: The Next Generation Core Game Book)

In fiction

A solar storm turned the northern plains of Mercury to glass, leaving the impression that it endured an atomic war for a thousand years. (VOY - Captain Proton: Defender of the Earth short story: "The Planets of the Future")
