Raan XIV was a 23rd century political leader, the king of the planet Bwuja in the 2260s.
History
Raan XIV was a water-breathing Bwujan who married Saya. He believed their only child Doro died before birth in 2262 or 2263.
Bwujan priests killed air-breathing babies, believing such mutations were a threat to their underwater civilization. But Raan was sympathetic and secretly sent such babies to air-filled caverns to live out their lives underground.
In 2266, Raan met a landing party from the starship USS Enterprise, but despite their use of comp-ox capsules to breathe underwater, the visitors were seen as invading surface dwellers, and they were to be tried and executed. However, Raan instead had the group taken to the air-filled caverns.
Later, Raan swam to the shore to see if air-breathers really lived on the surface, as he had been convinced by priests that such people were a deadly threat to his people. When he spotted Tako's family, he resolved to kill the surface leader. However, Tako had adopted Raan's son Doro, who'd survived and been taken to the surface. Raan and Saya agreed to adopt Tako's water-breathing son and raise him as their own. (TOS comic: "The World Beneath the Waves")
