Prometheus IV was a class M desert planet, the fourth planet of the Prometheus system, located in a sector near the Great Rift in the galaxy's Alpha or Beta Quadrant.
History and specifics
Terrain included dull-red sandy deserts with mountains, cliffs, ravines, mesas, bluffs, and some areas of quicksand. Weather included intense sandstorms along the desert floor. The world supported some predatory animal life. A photosynthetic crustacean species lived in scattered sand dunes. Sparse vegetation included vines and desiccated plants.
At some point, generations ago, a few hundred psychokinetic Julga were stranded on the world, establishing a compound atop a mesa of five enclaves surrounding a tower.
In 2268, during a survey mission to the system, the starship USS Enterprise was heavily damaged and required immediate replacement of food supplies. Commander Spock thought the crustaceans might serve that purpose, but they were too difficult to harvest. A landing party discovered a large storehouse of krill gathered beneath the mesa and made contact with the colonists, whose buildings had fallen into a state of disrepair and decay. The crew were able to rouse the Julga's hibernating living starship known as the Seed of Far Places. In gratitude, the Julga donated enough krill to resupply the Enterprise, vowed to secure an official alliance with the Federation, and donated the planet to the Federation as a potential colonial site near the Romulan Star Empire, before departing for their homeworld.
