A model was a miniature replica.
Ekoe, a First Dan native to Rifas-L, built model houses, demonstrating a level of creativity disallowed by his hierarchical place in his society. When his world was visited by a USS Enterprise landing party in 2267, Spock observed him construct a model then destroy it in a fit of unhappiness. Later, he showed Captain James T. Kirk one of his models and asked if he could leave his world with them. When Rifas-L was destroyed, one of Ekoe's model houses was the only thing that survived intact; it was picked up by a space scooper and shown to Kirk and Spock. (TOS comic: "The Perfect Dream")
In 2268, Montgomery Scott and Projeff Ellis built models of the USS Enterprise and the USS Farragut to see if power from hydroponics could be used to enrich the oxygen content of the environmental controls. Scott accidentally injured his arm when it got stuck in one of the Enterprise model's Jeffries tubes. (TOS - Day of Honor novel: Treaty's Law)
Geordi La Forge grew up making models of NX-class and Constitution-class starships. (TNG novel: Indistinguishable from Magic)
