The Marathan system was a binary star system located in Federation space in the galaxy's Alpha or Beta Quadrant not far from the Federation-Klingon Neutral Zone. Its second planet Marath was the homeworld of the Marathan civilization, with colonies on several nearby worlds.

History and specifics

Red giant Harmarka, the system's primary, was orbited by a blue-white dwarf Volash. The two stars maintained an unusual stability due to the type of ejecta from the secondary that refueled the primary. The system was within a few dozen light years of a star cluster, close enough to dominate the planets' night skies. The system's seven planets orbited both stars.

The Marathans colonized fourth planet Shakir as well as two habitable moons of third planet Gandar during periods of strife and civil war. In the 2210s decade, the factions warred. Not long after, Marathans developed warp drive, and a desire to join the Federation after encountering Klingons not far from their system.

In 2248, following the end of peace treaty negotiations on Marath, Ambassador Sarek, his son Spock, and various delegates from inhabited system worlds boarded the USS Enterprise to be returned home. After dropping off delegates at Shakir, a fleet of Shakir rebel fighters surrounded the starship, demanding the surrender of Sarek and the treaty documents. (TOS - SA novel: Crisis on Vulcan)
