Heresy was a belief which opposed established doctrine, usually religious. A person who held such beliefs was called a heretic.

History and specifics

The teachings of T'Rea were regarded as heresy by the Vulcans, which eventually led to her stepping down from the position of High Master of Gol in 2229. (TOS novelization: The Final Frontier)

Two or three thousand years ago, Bajorans in some areas of Bajor who were branded as heretics by their religion had their hearts ritually cut out while the person watched. (DS9 - Millennium novel: The War of the Prophets)

Believers of the Pah-wraiths were considered heretics. Certain extreme adherents to the mainstream Bajoran faith took militant action against those of their species who followed the Pah-wraiths. One such organisation was a sect called the Kahl-taan, which tried to eradicate Prylar Obanak Keelen and his followers for their deviant beliefs at the inconspicuous behest of the Vedek Assembly, though Major Kira Nerys, visiting the monastery to speak with its leader as a friend, was able to rescue them. This was not the last time custodians of the orthodox religion treated factions who subscribed to alternative beliefs as heretics. Even though he was a proponent for open-minded reevaluations of Bajoran perspectives, Vedek Yevir Linjarin decried Ohalu and his prophetic writings as heresy, since these texts claimed that the Prophets were not gods, but rather a benevolent alien race which harboured a symbiotic relationship with Bajor, teaching its natives and learning from them as well. After Kira - outraged to discover that the Assembly was connected to the murder of her friend Istani Reyla when she tried to protect the lost book of Ohalu, which were slated for destruction for their heretical nature - uploaded the prophecies to the Bajoran comnet in order to grant her people freedom to choose their own decisions. This led to the rise of the Ohalavaru, which a growing number began to support, including the influential Vedek Solis Tendren, his niece Cerin Mika and the acclaimed General Lenaris Holem of the Bajoran Militia. Though certain members of the conformist population decried the Ohalu truthseekers as heretics, a number of those who joined the movement or otherwise expressed their support for it believed that the Ohalu texts had enabled them to explore alternate versions of the mainstream faith. (DS9 episode: "Strange Bedfellows"; DS9 video game: The Fallen; DS9 - Avatar novels: Book One, Book Two; DS9 - Mission Gamma novel: Cathedral)

In 2268, Corben was branded a heretic by the Inquisitors and arrested. (TOS comic: "Day of the Inquisitors")
