Gunpowder was a substance used as a propellant in many projectile weapons. It consisted of sulfur, some form of carbon (such as coal) and potassium nitrate.

History and specifics

As well as projectile weapons, gunpowder was also used in the manufacture of fireworks. (TOS - My Brother's Keeper novel: Constitution)

In 2267, Captain James T. Kirk manufactured gunpowder by combining together some mineral elements that was available on a planetoid's surface in order to assist in overcoming a Gorn captain in combat that had been arranged by the Metrons. (TOS episode: "Arena")

This encounter was one of the many adventures of the USS Enterprise that Marla McGivers related to Khan Noonien Singh during their exile on Ceti Alpha V. After the planet had been rendered an inhospitable desert, this tale inspired Khan to manufacture gunpowder out of the few useful resources on Ceti Alpha V's surface.
