Deep Domain is a Star Trek novel, a TOS adventure by Howard Weinstein published in April 1987, the 33rd numbered release from Pocket Books.

Description

A routine diplomatic mission to the water-world Akkalla becomes a nightmarish search for a missing Spock and Chekov, a search that plunges Admiral Kirk headlong into a corrupt government's desperate struggle to retain power.

For both a Federation science outpost and Akkalla's valiant freedom fighters have begun uncovering the ancient secrets hidden beneath her tranquil oceans. Secrets whose exposure may mean civil war for the people of Akkalla — and death for the crew of the starship Enterprise.

• The historical note only mentions, the book is set after The Motion Picture. The final chapter makes it clear however, it is also set right before Spock assumes command of the Enterprise while Chekov is transferred to USS Reliant and Kirk begins teaching at Starfleet Academy: The status quo in the beginning of The Wrath of Khan.
• When reminiscing with Sulu about their time on Enterprise, Chekov mentions events from The Naked Time.

Background

• This story takes place from stardate 7823.6, in 2278, near the end of the Enterprise's second five-year mission under Kirk.
• Regarding the novel's origins, author Howard Weinstein explained, "It's October 1984. After STIII's successful summer run, Leonard Nimoy is gearing up for ST IV, stirring the story-development pot, brainstorming ideas with both famed and lesser-known scientists and writers. Serendipitously, I turned out to be one of those lesser-known writers… As it happened, this invitation came right after my return from a New England whale-watching cruise. So whales were on my mind. The two-hour session with Nimoy was great fun, and among the ideas I tossed out was one about intelligent whale-like creatures on another planet. I didn't know at the time that Nimoy and producer Harve Bennett^MA had already decided on time-travel, and I left thinking I might actually have a shot at submitting a detailed idea. Now that's motivation! Within days, I'd written a complete story and asked if I could send it. Leonard promptly but politely crushed my dream of writing Star Trek IV, informing me they already had a concept and writer in mind. No point in wasting a good story, so I converted mine into a proposal which eventually became my second Trek novel, Deep Domain… Soon somebody at Paramount noticed my novel had some substantial similarities to Star Trek IV. Whoopsie! Fortunately, I was able to reconfigure the story without losing its ethical conflicts and environmental message. To this day, I have no idea if I actually played a small role in the development of that movie, or whether my chit-chat about whales was purely coincidental… but the producers were kind enough to give me a 'Special Thanks' credit."
