A construct was an autonomous or semi-autonomous device, a type of robot technology developed by the Iconians to serve the Iconian Empire. In the 25th century, constructs were part of the Empire's Herald ground forces. (STO - Iconian War mission: "Blood of Ancients")

Constructs were modular machines. In the field, such a construct moved as one unit but consisted of separate elements held together by sophisticated gravity technology. When defeated in combat, a construct would fall apart like a personal armor suit without a knight. A construct followed a humanoid body plan, with a torso flanked by a pair of arms and legs, and topped by a head. Herald defilers could reconstruct nearby constructs and revive them in combat. Herald constructs could also merge together to form fused constructs. (STO - Iconian War mission: "Blood of Ancients")

In an a parallel universe where the Iconians and Borg underwent fusion thousands of years ago, Aetherian constructs were diamond- and cube-shaped, floating robots with detached components. They could fire proton beams. The Khitomer Alliance of the primary universe first encountered such constructs aboard the Aetherian dreadnought Harmony in 2411. During a visit to the Harmony by Hugh, Director of the Borg Cooperative and Borg Reclamation Project, following a request for assistance by Thaseen-Fei, a construct emerged from an Aetherian portal and fired at one of Hugh's officers. Hugh demanded that Thaseen-Fei tell them to stand down. The Thaseen claimed the construct acted upon identifying the Yasutake away team as Borg but then stunned and captured the director. During the boarding by Admiral Kuumaarke and the Other, Kuumaarke identified the construct as an Aetherian security system of some sort. According to the Y Liax-Lodar file aboard the Harmony, Aetherian military doctrine evolved after the Great Cybernetic Onslaught and by the influence of the Aether.
