A banshee was a supernatural, ghostly entity in Irish folklore. It was a non-corporeal, humanoid-shaped, floating being known for persistent screaming and wailing.

In 2374 at The Captain's Table, Kathryn Janeway described feeling like a flying banshee scaring the crew of Zingara while discussing the Menace. Later she saw the Zingara as being surrounded by green-colored banshees. (VOY - The Captain's Table novel: Fire Ship)
